Radio anomalies detection on AIS through advanced signal analysis and machine learning techniques

OUR SOLUTION
a case that receives AIS signals
For several years, AIS design weaknesses have been fraudulently exploited by different actors to hide illegal activities (illegal fishing, piracy, smuggling, bypassing of international sanctions…), but also for military purposes.
For about ten years, DIATEAM offers, in relation with French DGA (Procurement agency) and Marine Nationale (Navy), an innovative AIS anomalies detection solution which has in many cases proved successful in an operational context. This solution has recently been through major evolutions to multiply its capabilities and increase its detection performance, as well as to add innovative features to it.
This work, which has been carried out with the support of the French Agence de l’Innovation de Défense – AID (Defence Innovation Agency), end clients and a CIFRE thesis, is fully in line with DIATEAM’s DNA and historical commitment for Research & Developement subjects.

AIS, A WORLDWIDE SYSTEM
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a worldwide automatic radio system used in the maritime sector to improve safety at sea.
It makes it possible for ships to share real-time info (position, speed, direction…) with one another, as well as with coastal stations to prevent collisions, to ensure follow-up and surveillance, but also to facilitate sea rescue operations in case of emergency.
This information, shared inside the ship with other pieces of equipment (ECDIS mapping systems, RADAR…) makes it possible for the ship to obtain a detailed knowledge of the situation. Ports and administrations also strongly depend on AIS for their daily operations. The system, which has been designed in the 1990’s after big shipwrecks, is now widely used in the maritime world, and more than 300 000 ships in the world permanently transmit AIS information.
